Hello, my name is Tara MacCallum. I grew up in Salisbury, Vermont and later went to Johnson State College, now known as Northern Vermont University. I majored in Elementary Education and minored in Psychology. I loved it so much that I knew I wanted to continue to live and teach in Vermont and happily ended up in White River Junction.
I greatly enjoy working at Dothan Brook School. I have been teaching at DBS for six years and have nine years of teaching experience including previous schools as well. You may not know that my first year at DBS, I was teaching kindergarten with Mrs. Rydjeski and Mrs. Schultz. For the other five years, I have been teaching second grade. Currently, I am only two courses away from earning my Masters in Education from Augustana University with a concentration in Special Education.
I love teaching all grades of elementary school, but second grade has a special place in my heart because it is the year that reading usually starts to take off. Kindergarten and first grade is the span when students are learning the foundations of reading. In second grade, I love watching the shift that takes place when students are starting to read to learn or for enjoyment. It is such an exciting and rewarding time for students and I am always happy to be a part of it. Taking the lyrics from our school song, “Dothan Brook is a very special place” and I am happy to be part of this community and school.
