Reflections on School Security

Friday, December 21, 2012
Dear Families,
One of the first Dothan Brook events that I attended last year was the ice cream social.  After seeing how the community turned out for this event, I knew that I would enjoy working in Hartford.  Seeing the community come together on Monday morning as many parents dropped their children off at school and chatted in the lobby and again on Wednesday night for the Winter Concert reaffirmed my belief that DBS has an amazing and supportive community.  This high degree of parent involvement makes it so that I am excited to send my children to DBS and as a school leader I want to strive to actively foster this spirt.
Over the course of the last week, as I reflected upon last Friday’s tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, I kept the DBS family in mind as I struggled with the thought of how we can protect our children without sacrificing the community that we all cherish.  At this time, I do not have any concrete answers to this question, but the school district and myself have started to consider some options.  First, I met with members of the Hartford Police Department to review our current safety plans.  They agreed that our current plan is effective and based on current best practices we identified some areas for improvement.  Second, Superintendent Tom DeBalsi and I have been in communication concerning these recommendations and we are currently developing a plan to implement them.  Finally, to increase their knowledge of the school, the HPD will hold a full-day training at DBS over the December break.
In the upcoming months the Dothan Brook School and Hartford School District will continue to reflect upon, revise and implement the school’s safety plan based on new research and the needs of the community.  After some initial research is complete, Superintendent DeBalsi and I will hold a forum to share information and seek your input.  We hope that you will be able to join us for this important conversation.
Once again, I would like to thank you for your support and please have a wonderful vacation.
