At DBS, Mrs. Thorburn, Mrs. Vielleux, and Mr. Lauritzen provide small group and individual instruction for students who need additional support developing skills in reading, writing, and/or mathematics.
Language Arts

Activities for Home
In language arts, we support students with their reading, writing, spelling, listening, and speaking skills. We utilize a variety of programs to support all of these skills. At home your child can:
- Read to you OR you can read to them.
- Participate in family conversations daily.
- Find words or letters they know on road signs, storefronts, or in magazines and newspapers.
- Write your grocery list before shopping.
- Write letters to friends or relatives both far away and near--everyone loves receiving mail!
Mathematics

Activities for Home
In math we support students with their counting, numeral recognition, computation, problem solving, and mathematical thinking. We utilize a variety of programs to support these skills. At home your child can:
- Count objects with 1:1 correspondence (saying one number for every object they touch) using everyday objects like coins, dry beans, noodles, buttons, etc.
- Count orally by ones, twos, fives, and tens.
- Play games like Yahtzee, Trouble, Uno, etc.
- Do mental math in the car, or anywhere! For example: "We have to travel 10 miles and we've already driven 3. How many more miles do we have to go?"
- Cook or bake something with an adult.
